History of the Upper Plym Valley .

Led by Win Scutt B.A. DTLIS, MCIA,FSA. Senior Properties Curator(West) English Heritage.

The area comprises an extensive multi-period archaeological landscape including ceremonial and funerary monuments of presumed Neolithic and early Bronze Age date; land divisions, some 250 surviving hut circles and enclosures of presumed mid- to late Bronze Age date; evidence of tin and peat extraction, rabbit warrening and farming of medieval and post-medieval date; as well as infrastructure associated with 20th-century china clay extraction. In total there are 108 scheduled areas on the National Heritage List for England wholly or partly within the guardianship boundary There is a little about the Upper Plym on our website at https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/upper-plym-valley/history/ and an introductory video to English Heritage sites on Dartmoor at https://youtu.be/77UtRXjNwJA Last year I commissioned Historic England to carry out detailed surveys of our Dartmoor sites and their excellent research report can be downloaded at https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/reports/36-2023. We shall not be able to cover the whole area on this walk but enough to give you a flavour.

A Walk around Loddiswell and Blackdown Rings

Led by Judith Farmer MA, BA, B.Ed Cert Arch.

Judith will be showing us how historical facts and archaeological evidence together enable us to understand better the development of a South Hams village. We shall see an Iron Age fort, a Norman Castle, a Holy Well, changes in religious beliefs, power struggles and conflicting ideas of conservation. We hope to finish about 16.15. We shall then go to Avon Nursery Cafe for a chat and tea.

When: Mon. June 23rd 14.00 N.B. Walk will start promptly!

Please wear stout shoes and bring a walking stick as there are steep slopes and rough ground in places.

Circular walk taking in Bolt Tail.

Andrew Crabb DNPA.

We will explore the fantastic promontory fort on Bolt Tail, discuss the recent community excavations of it's ramparts and interior. The archaeological test pit undertaken to inform future site management. We will also visit other areas of archaeological and historic interest on the headland and adjacent cliffs. We then head back to Hope Cove via the beautiful square of Inner Hope.

Circular Walk from the Village of Forder, Saltash

Led by Martin Lister from Saltash Heritage.

We will walk from Forder passing Trematon Castle down to Anthony Passage and back up the valley to Forder.

St Levan circular walk.

This will start opposite St Levan’s Gate at 18:00, and proceed along the dockyard wall, look at an OS stone, talk about Keyham Lake and Goshen Street. It is hoped to go to Blockhouse Park and down Fordhill to the old Palladium Theatre. If the walk is not too long we may also visit the old Van Dyke Club and then back to St Levan’s Gate.
