The area comprises an extensive multi-period archaeological landscape including ceremonial and funerary monuments of presumed Neolithic and early Bronze Age date; land divisions, some 250 surviving hut circles and enclosures of presumed mid- to late Bronze Age date; evidence of tin and peat extraction, rabbit warrening and farming of medieval and post-medieval date; as well as infrastructure associated with 20th-century china clay extraction. In total there are 108 scheduled areas on the National Heritage List for England wholly or partly within the guardianship boundary There is a little about the Upper Plym on our website at https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/upper-plym-valley/history/ and an introductory video to English Heritage sites on Dartmoor at https://youtu.be/77UtRXjNwJA Last year I commissioned Historic England to carry out detailed surveys of our Dartmoor sites and their excellent research report can be downloaded at https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/reports/36-2023. We shall not be able to cover the whole area on this walk but enough to give you a flavour.
